Showcasing Success

Online learning is already being used successfully in both general and Jewish day school education. Here are some stories of how online learning is being employed today, including profiles of nine day schools across the continent.

Success Stories in General Education

The state of Florida has been encouraging the development of online learning for over a decade. In 1997, the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) was established as the first online learning institution for K-12 in the United States. Fully accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and The Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation, FLVS has been helping more than 100,000 students nationwide to advance their education in ways that are not available in traditional face-to-face models. The website link below presents the stories of students taking online courses with FLVS. The video also describes FLVS's innovative educational role and ways in which they have bridged the gap between public and private schools.

In 2009, the New York City Department of Education launched the Innovation Zone (iZone) project in hopes of expanding assumptions about education by embracing technology, including online learning. This year, the iZone venture includes 81 schools throughout the city. Within the next few years, the Department of Education plans to expand the iZone project to over 300 schools in its public school system. At City Polytechnic High School, a Brooklyn-based iZone school, high school students are able to accumulate credits toward a bachelor degree by taking online courses taught by college professors. They can even receive an Associate's degree along with their high school diploma in five years.
